From beachfront casual to proper fine dining, Umhlanga's restaurant scene punches well above its size. Here are the spots worth knowing about — and a few things to keep in mind before you go.

Umhlanga has more good restaurants per square kilometre than most South African towns twice its size. The combination of a wealthy residential base, consistent tourist traffic, and proximity to Durban has created a dining scene with genuine range — you can eat fresh sushi, a wood-fired steak, a proper curry, or the kind of unhurried breakfast that sets a holiday up correctly, all within a fifteen-minute walk of the beach.

The Village

The heart of Umhlanga dining is the Village — a compact cluster of restaurants, cafés, and bars around Chartwell Drive and the streets running off it. Tables spill onto pavements, the atmosphere on a Friday or Saturday evening is genuinely lively, and the range of options means even a group with differing preferences will find something. The Village is walkable from most of our beachfront apartments and is where most guests spend the majority of their evenings.

Gateway and Oceans

For sheer volume of choice, Gateway Theatre of Shopping — ten minutes inland — has a large food court and a solid selection of sit-down restaurants around its perimeter. Oceans Mall, newer and smaller, sits closer to the beach and has a handful of well-regarded options. Both are useful on rainy days or when the Village is fully booked, though the atmosphere is predictably more mall-like.

What Umhlanga Does Well

  • Seafood — fresh linefish, prawns, and calamari are staples done well across most menus.
  • Breakfast and brunch — the café culture here is strong; expect proper coffee and long weekend menus.
  • Curry — the KZN coast has some of the best Indian food in the country, and Umhlanga is no exception.
  • Steaks — the red meat culture is alive and well; portions tend to be generous.
  • Sundowners — several spots have rooftop or elevated decks with ocean views that are hard to argue with.
Booking ahead

In December and over long weekends, the best restaurants book out days in advance. If you have somewhere specific in mind, call ahead — walk-in tables are difficult to come by in peak season.

A Note on Price

Umhlanga sits at the upper end of the KZN dining price spectrum, but not unreasonably so. A main course at a mid-range restaurant runs between R180 and R280; fine dining starts around R350. The good news is that quality is generally consistent — it is hard to have a genuinely bad meal here, which cannot be said of every tourist town.

Self-Catering and the Local Shops

All our apartments are fully self-catering, and the local Pick n Pay and Checkers both stock everything you need for cooking in — including a solid selection of local wines, fresh produce, and braai supplies. The fish shop on Chartwell Drive is worth knowing about for fresh catch bought directly. Many guests settle into a rhythm of cooking most evenings and eating out two or three times — which is a comfortable and cost-effective way to holiday.
